Four Charges Make a Year

Quarterly billing at $149 annualizes to roughly $596. That is the cost of keeping the appointment for twelve months, and it is the number that belongs in any comparison, because every other service in this market quotes by the year.

Our check found no separate first-year discount, so $596 approximates year one, year two and each year after.

There is no accusation in this. The structure is disclosed and the multiplication takes five seconds. The difficulty is that four moderate charges scattered across a year attract less attention than one large charge does, and a card statement is a poor place to notice a pattern.

Hawaii's Side of the Bargain

It is worth being concrete about what the money purchases, because the statutory duty is small and identical for every provider in the state.

Under HRS § 425R-4, Hawaii's appointment provision within its Model Registered Agents Act, your agent has to hold a business location at a Hawaii street address able to take in service of process and whatever else the state or a court sends. Eligibility runs to three categories: a person residing in the islands, an entity organized under Hawaii law, or an outside entity licensed to transact business or conduct affairs in the state. Commercial and noncommercial agents both count. An entity may not appoint itself.

Point six deserves the emphasis. The instinct with quarterly billing is to act the moment a charge posts, which is the worst possible starting position because it puts urgency ahead of sequence. The next charge is $149. An unanswered summons is not.
